It is getting warming up–outside and in Oakland’s political community with more talks about budget cuts.
Is Mayor Dellums too optimistic about getting stimulus money to fund Oakland’s police department? The Oakland Tribune has a very good piece on budget cuts in the police department and A Better Oakland chastised the media frenzy on this issue two weeks ago.
The residents hoping that a new superintendent for the Oakland Unified School District will fix the failing school system are sending lots of comment to A Better Oakland.
Rockridge residents are more concerned about the impacts of the latest Safeway plan. Community groups are getting more active, check out Friends and Neighbor of College Avenue and RCPC’s website for latest update.
Another development for Rockridge is that Dreyer’s decision to withdraw its plan to rent the vacant space at 5929 College Ave. to Red Oak Realty, which instigated much controversy. They are now looking for other renters to preserve Colleve Avenue’s small business oriented atmosphere. This is beginning to sound a whole lot like the Mission District’s American Apparel rumble last spring. Maybe we’re all not so different after all.
And, it’s not only the budget that has a big hole, but also downtown Oakland.
But alas, Oakland is blessed with great ice creameries to cool down all.
