oaknorthtree4Art famously flourishes when times are tough.  And times, according to Oakland’s city council on Thursday, are tough indeed.  A Better Oakland blogged today about how to volunteer as a park steward – a service we’ll be more in need of soon – and read about how the city is planning to fund local artists, despite the budget crisis.

If you’re living in the Temescal district and are sick of all your tried-and-true hang-out spots, check out this new restaurant and wine bar, Barlata, recently reviewed by the East Bay Express.

Also, you’ve been looking for an excuse to learn (or teach someone) about California’s natural environment, the Oakland museum is hosting a Walk across California exhibit today and next weekend.

Finally, plan ahead for next weekend: the Temescal Street Fair on Telegraph will be taking place from noon to 6 pm on Sunday.  Don’t miss the FREE Temescal cinema showings every Thursday, starting June 11 and going until July 16 at 49th and Telegraph.  Movies begin when it gets dark.  To find out about upcoming community and political events check out Living in the O’s list here.
