North Oakland Now 8.3.09

on August 3, 2009

Two of the detained hikers in Iran are journalists with Bay area roots. Our thoughts are with them.

Fallen journalist Chauncey Bailey is gone but not forgotten. The Chauncey Bailey Project is a collaboration of journalists that continued the reporting Bailey was working on when he was murdered in down town Oakland on August 2, 2007.  The collaboration of Bay area journalists included students from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

Bailey was an editor at the Oakland Post, and is still listed as such on the masthead.  Two years after his murder Bailey’s family still feels the void.

BART Police have drafted plans for an oversight committee. You have until August 7th to make your thoughts known.

A new school year is around the corner.  In the meantime, Oakland youth are taking advantage of life skills and job training.

Commuting by bike in Oakland can be a challenge.  Our intrepid reporter, Alexia Underwood, chronicled her experiences as she wended her way from Rockridge to Downtown and back.
