Summer treat series: Latin treats in Fruitvale

on June 16, 2011

Throughout the month of June, Oakland North is featuring a weekly food series of summer treats that can be found in Oakland. Chinatown and the Middle Eastern corridor along Telegraph Avenue were the first two installments in the series and this week we are focusing on Latin treats that can be found in Fruitvale.

Oakland North reporter Dara Kerr wandered around the neighborhood and stopped by various taco stands, bakeries, ice cream shops, restaurants and fruit stands to see what she could find outside of the traditional Fruitvale tacos and burritos.

What she found were places that serve traditional Mexico City-style food, like El Huarache Azteca, where there aren’t any burritos on the menu but there are nopal cactus quesadillas filled with sautéed squash blossoms. She also found all sorts of sweet treats such as sugary empanadas made from plantains and filled with cream, crystallized coconut candy and makeshift lollypops covered in tamarind paste.

Fruitvale is bursting with all sorts of delicious and diverse food, so Dara just narrowed her list down to 10 of the most tasty and interesting items she found, which are featured in the photo slideshow above. (Be sure to click the “captions” button on the bottom right of the slideshow to read about each treat.) Below are the details on where each treat can be found. If you have any Fruitvale treat suggestions be sure to add them in the comments section below. Or, got an idea for another kind of treat we should try? Let us know!

I work in the area, and I’m about to get fat off the yumminess I eat every day!

    -Los Cocos for pupusas
-Pipirin for Pierna Tortas, (stand at 34th Ave & Farnam St)
-Nieves for Rose ice cream, and Mixed Pecan/Coconut Raspados, (snow cone)
-16 de Septiembre for Lengua and Birria Tacos
-El Oasis for Rompope Raspados (36th and Int’l)
-Mariscos La Costa for Tostadas de Camarones, (37th and Int’l)
-Tamales Mi Lupita for the Salvadorean Tamales, wrapped in a banana leaf.
-Nieves Cinco de Mayo’s other restaurant on Int’l for burgers

Too much to eat, too little time!
