Congratulations, Oakland North graduates!
on May 8, 2010
Today the first class of Oakland North reporters graduates from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Dozens of student journalists have served on the Oakland North staff since the site was launched in autumn, 2008, and many more have offered stories as freelance contributors. As the students graduate from the two-year masters program today, their departure marks the completion of the first class of J-school students to have come through the program since launch of the school’s hyperlocal digital reporting project (which also runs the sites Mission Local and Richmond Confidential), and to have contributed to developing, improving and maintaining the sites throughout their time at the school. The hard work, energy and creativity of the Oakland North crew have helped make this an informative, vibrant news source for the Oakland community, and they’ve set the pace for student reporters to come.
Congratulations to Oakland North graduates Huda Ahmed, Anna Bloom, Elise Craig, Allison Davis, Linnea Edmeier, Isabel Esterman, Maggie Fazelli-Fard, Sierra Filucci, Will Jason, Jude Joffe-Block, Dara Kerr, Paula Lehman, Clare Major, Melanie Mason, Sade McDougal, Ayako Mie, Casey Miner, Diano Montano, Tasneem Raja, Samson Reiny, Martin Ricard, Steve Saldivar, Christina Salerno, Alexia Underwood, Kristine Wong, and Shilanda Woolridge.
Over the summer, Oakland North and the two other hyperlocal sites will be staffed by a smaller crew of summer interns, and we’ll welcome a new incoming class when school reconvenes in August. We’re looking forward to meeting our new reporters, and to seeing the bylines of our graduates as they continue their reporting adventures around the world!
