Oakland reacts to Ferguson grand jury decision
on November 25, 2014
Demonstrators swept through downtown Oakland Monday night, eventually moving toward the Grand Lake area, last night after hearing the grand jury’s decision not to indict police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of teenager Michael Brown. With helicopters circling above, the demonstrators shut down the 580 freeway near Grand Avenue for several hours, flanked by piles of trash burning on the off-ramp nearby.

Photo caption on your third picture in the series is incorrect. That’s Lake Merritt – not Lake Temescal.
Check pics 4 and 5 too. The lake near Grand Avenue is called Lake Merritt.
You need to come to Oakland more often. Many of your captions refer to “Grand Avenue, in Oakland, near Lake Temescal.” I actually live quite near Lake Temescal and it is nowhere near Grand Avenue; it is a couple of miles away. The lake near Grand Avenue is Lake Merritt.
These photos are absolutely bizarre. I attended a private gathering last night in the Bellevue Towers, by Lake Merritt. My best estimate is that it was about 8:45 PM when I turned right onto Grand Avenue, drove down to the 580 westbound onramp, and sailed onto the freeway. There wasn’t a soul there. I saw the mess on eastbound 580, complete with multiple cop cars; but 580 westbound at that time was empty. I can’t have missed them by more than 10 or 15 minutes.
