Where to swim in Oakland this summer

The typically foggy East Bay summer days don’t inspire a trip to the pool for most, but for the occasional day the sun does come out, there are still plenty of options to cool off with a dip, swim some laps or sign kids up for swim lessons in Oakland. Here’s our list.

Adoptable animal of the week: Beau and Maxine

Oakland North is continuing with our feature. Every Tuesday, Oakland Animal Services will spotlight an “Animal of the Week” that’s up for adoption at their facility. This week it’s two bunnies, Beau and Maxine.

Dancing under the stars at Jack London Square

Every Friday night this summer, Oakland’s Linden Street Dance Studio is offering free dance lessons at Jack London Square. Anyone is welcome to attend and learn the basics of a variety of dance styles, including salsa, swing and tango.

City sailing on Lake Merritt

Lake Merritt may look calm and flat, like a city lake that’s probably more for pedal boats and kayaks than sailboats. But while the lake doesn’t have the challenging big swells and wind of the San Francisco Bay, it offers plenty of opportunities for sailing.

To alternating applause and boos, supporters and opponents of a proposed dog park at Lakeside Park broke even on Wednesday evening during a meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, when the plan drew a tie vote from the commission.
