City Slicker Farms breaks ground on new West Oakland urban farm
On Thursday, City Slicker Farms broke ground on its latest project, the West Oakland Park and Urban Farm, a new community garden and open park space expected to serve more than 3,000 residents.

Over 200 Oaklanders spent Saturday cleaning up parks, gardens and bus stops, or volunteering at 24 other service sites throughout the city for the first-ever “Throw Down for the Town” event. Organized by the Ella Baker Center, the event brought neighbors out to help beautify their neighborhoods.

Thanks to a $4 million grant from the California State Parks Department, which City Slicker Farms was awarded on November 8, the parcel will soon be transformed into a community farm and park. Although the department allows organizations up to eight years to get their programs established, Finnin estimates that City Slicker Farms will break ground for the community farm at the end of 2011.
