Soda, income, race, health: the issues behind Oakland’s Measure HH

Ian Simmons, 33, of Oakland, is working to open a market in North Oakland by the end of the year. Seeing friends and family with health problems he believes are related to soda consumption, he says he supports Measure HH, a one-cent-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.

Modern science is slowly unraveling the link between sugar and preventable diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases, conditions that affect the health of minorities, the young, and the poor more than anyone else. These are some of the issues behind Oakland’s Measure HH.
