Oakland Bites: The Grilled Cheese Invitational
on February 20, 2009
Prepare yourselves: You are never going to look at your chili cook-off the same way again.
With a tagline of “Bread. Butter. Cheese. Victory,” The second annual Norcal Grilled Cheese Invitational hits San Francisco’s Dolores Park on Saturday, doling out free grilled cheese sandwiches and trophies to the ultimate grilled cheese champions. Though registration for contest participants is closed, you too can stop in to taste, vote and help crown the ultimate grilled cheese chef.
The GCI has three categories of entries. The missionary position is your classic grilled cheese–white bread, butter and orange cheese only. Kama Sutra entries can mix it up and add addional ingredients–so long as it’s grilled and at least 60 percent of the ingredients are cheese. Last is the honeypot–the dessert grilled cheese. I’m not entirely sure what that is going to look like, but I’ve got high hopes.
Okay, so this may not be the fanciest food event out there. But given the current economy, who can turn down free grilled cheese and shenanigans? The event lasts from 12-5 p.m, but the grilling begins at 1 p.m.
And in case you’re thinking, oh that quirky San Francisco, what will they think of next–I have news for you. This competition is national, baby. Saturday’s event is only the Northern California Regional Round. The Austin regionals hit Texas on March 15, and the big dance of grilled cheese competitions, the national event hits L.A. on March 21.
