North Oakland Now: April 11, 2009
on April 11, 2009
Good afternoon, North Oakland! Have you seen this BART video from Wednesday of a protestor splattering BART general manager Dorothy Dugger with red paint? Gabriel Meyers, 31, of Citrus Heights, shouts something about “the blood of Oscar Grant” as he’s being led from the room. It’s a surprising scene, worth checking out.
Looks like I need to spend some time at Cafe Van Kleef. I’d just forwarded Oakland North reporter Lauren Rudser’s video on the Hot Pink Feathers burlesque show to some friends with the subject line, “We need to check this out,” when I came across this article about The Squidling Bros. Circus Sideshow’s bizarro performance there earlier this week. Machetes, mousetraps, body mutilation, staple guns, and sword-swallowing were involved!
Finally, wondering if anyone’s checked out Oakland’s new upscale Southern “bourbon and bites” restaurant, Pican, yet. It opened in mid-March, and the menu reminds me of the gussied-up comfort food trend that swept my hometown, Philly, a few years ago. But, as I learned at some of those pricey spots back home, sometimes truffle-and-scallop mac and cheese is just plain wierd, and leaves you craving the original. How does Pican stack up?
