Oakland police release sketch of suspect in Lake Merritt sexual assaults

The Oakland Police Department released a sketch of the man suspected of robbing two women on their way home in Oakland’s Lake Merritt neighborhood on September 19. During the course of the robberies, the women were also sexually assaulted. The suspect is described as an African-American man with a medium build, between 5’10 and 6’0 tall. He was reported to have been wearing dark clothing and armed with a weapon.

The attacks occurred on the1400 block of 3rd Avenue and East 18th Street and Lakeshore Avenue.

Oakland Police Spokesperson Holly Joshi released a statement outlining several things people can do to protect themselves against random attacks, including being aware of your surroundings, never walking by yourself, staying in well-lit and populated areas, being alert when entering and exiting your vehicle and remembering to lock the door after entering your vehicle.

Anyone with information about the attacker is asked to call police at 510-238-3641 or call the 24-hour hotline at 510-637-0298 with any information that may lead to the identification or arrest of this suspect.
