Two Berkeley burglars captured. One at large

on September 22, 2010

The Berkeley Police Department followed three male suspects fleeing the scene of a residential burglary in Berkeley traveling southbound into North Oakland on September 20. A neighbor called 911 after witnessing the suspects pulling off a window screen at the Alcatraz Avenue residence. Berkeley officers arrived on the scene in less than a minute, just as the suspects were leaving the scene.

Two motor officers and a patrol officer pursued the suspect’s vehicle heading south on Sacramento Street before it crashed into a metal parking barrier at Golden Gate Playground on the west side of 62nd and Herzog Streets.

The three suspects jumped out of the car and fled on foot. Two of the three suspects were caught in the area of 63rd Street and San Pablo Avenue and were later identified by community members as having burglarized the residence on Alcatraz Avenue.

The third suspect has not been identified.

Berkeley Police Department Sergeant Mary Kusmiss said that one of the suspects, a 15-year-old Oakland resident, cut his hand on broken car window glass after the collision and was treated at a local hospital. The doctors medically cleared him before he was transported and booked into Alameda County Juvenile Hall.

The other suspect, a 21 year-old, was arrested and booked into the BPD Jail.

Kusmiss reported that two computers, a glass jar containing coins, a Dell computer projector and assorted computer cables were recovered the suspect’s car. The resident that was burglarized positively identified the property as his.

My partner and I live smack dab in the middle of the map shown above and came home four days ago to find signs of an attempted break in. Very similar MO to what was described above- all the screens were removed from our windows and there was damage to the back door from where they’d tried to dig/pry a window out of the frame. Luckily we had alert neighbors and over 100 lbs. of dog at home. Hope the capture of these two puts an end to this BS.
