What’s the worst pothole in North Oakland?
on April 27, 2011
Hey Oakland North readers, it’s time for the city’s annual pothole repair blitz! We want to know which of North Oakland’s many potholes is truly the most ruinous of the species. Which one bent your bike tire, banged up your car or swallowed your dog? Nominate your contenders on our Facebook fan page or in the comments selection below. Then on Friday at noon we will close the nomination pool, put together a poll listing the nominees and invite all of Oakland to vote on North Oakland’s Worst Pothole.
Update: The poll is now open through May 4 at noon — you can vote here.
May the worst pothole win!
(P.S. To request a Public Works pothole repair during the blitz you can call 510-615-5566 or go online to www.OaklandPW.com.)

The stretch of Telegraph (both sides) under the Highway 24 overpass ((55th/56th St.)
agreed.
Agreed. However, I heard that will be getting fixed.
The next stretch that needs help is Shattuck Avenue from Aileen to 65th (Berkeley border). That section needs a full repave just like what Berkeley did.
Agreed – I have to drive it everyday to work and it has about ruined my maxima. Once I hit the biggest hole (there are many) squarely on the wheel and I thought the whole car was done.
Under 580 at lake shore. I think my alignment was off after that one!
Tell me about it!
Perkins and Vernon. Made me bite my tongue. And no i dont drive around with my tongue out, thank you.
quit wasting money on street cleaning 4 days a month and fix the goddamn roads! i have moved back to Oakland in 1992 and spent several thousand dollars on fixing my vehicles because of the shitty condition of the roads and the 880 and 580! seriously. our town is a joke. more like living in the film Road Warrior. fix this shit now and legalize pot to get the tax money to do so. stupid idiots!
Piedmont, south of MacArthur, next to the Kaiser construction. (I’m sure Kaiser’s going to be repaving this…I hope?!!?)
By far, the most pervasive, deepest, and dangerous potholes for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are those on Shattuck Avenue from 59th Street to the Berkeley border at Woolsey. We have consistently complained about these potholes for more than four years, and requested City Councilmember, Jane Brunner, advocate that this section of Shattuck Avenue be repaved with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. Although one of the most heavily traveled streets in North Oakland, this section of Shattuck is not even on the 5 year paving plan for Public Works. We were successful in getting the City of Berkeley to pave their share. Welcome to Oakland–don’t mind the potholes. We have provided the City of Oakland with notice of a dangerous condition especially for commuting bicyclists. Additionally, this section of Shattuck Avenue violates the City of Oakland’s own blight ordinance in that the City is allowing deteriorated and crumbling paved surfaces to persist and grow. Not to mention it’s hell on my alignment. Filling the potholes won’t work anymore as the pavement itself is so deteriorated that the potholes just migrate. Let’s get those potholes fixed with a complete repaving job.
though it’s been mentioned a bit already, the stretch on telegraph between 57th and 51st is really hellish. i BIKE and count my lucky stars every time i make it through that area alive.
