OPD release name of shooting victim

on September 22, 2011

The 31-year-old Oakland resident who died in Wednesday’s shooting on 52nd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way was identified as Remilio Myers, Oakland police said Thursday.

Myers was one of three adult males wounded in the shooting near Children’s Hospital at 11:30 am yesterday, said Oakland Police Sergeant Holly Joshi. One of the victims is in critical condition, Joshi said, and the other suffered non life-threatening injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation, and Oakland police are encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department’s Major Crimes Section: (510) 238-3326.

Shootings in this neighborhood are not new, nor are the near constant drug deals happening on that block. Drive on 52nd between MLK and Market with any regularity and you see cars double-parked and transactions through the window with people milling about on the street exactly where those bullet casings were found. Until that activity is gone from the block, expect more shootings. That street is not safe, and the police do not patrol the area enough to ward off the dealers. It was only a matter of time before someone died there.

Thanks for the comment JK. Do you live in that neighborhood, where the shooting happened? What kinds of actions would you like to see the city, and the OPD, to take?
