OPD releases sketch of suspect wanted for sexual assault

on March 6, 2012

The Oakland Police Department has released a sketch of a man they are seeking in connection with a robbery and sexual assault that took place early Sunday morning in East Oakland.

According to an OPD press release, at 5:40 that morning, a 29-year-old woman was sitting in her car talking to a male friend on the 200 block of Sunnyside. The suspect, described as an African American male in his 20s, who was between 5’6″ and 5’8″ feet tall, clean shaven with short hair, and wearing black clothing, robbed the male friend at gunpoint, and then got into the woman’s car and forced her to drive him to an isolated area. The suspect sexually assaulted her, then fled on foot.

The Oakland Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $5000 for information leading to the arrest in this case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Youth and Family Service Division at (510) 238-3641 or the tip line at (510) 637-0298.

Thanks for reporting. My concern as a women in Oakland is that the OPD does not list sexual assault stats on it’s crime spotting website. Why is that? This something that should be readily available. I have even called seeking statistics and I was not helped.

I have a feeling that way more rapes occur versus the ones that are reported upon. Is this a crime that oaklandnorth.net will be reporting on on a regular basis, or is this a special case?

I feel that this lack of transparency concerning OPD is something that should be highlighted.
