Reward now $20,000 for information on 2010 shooting death

on July 13, 2011

A $20,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the arrest of suspects responsible for the shooting death of a Chilean man just blocks from the Berkeley/Oakland border last summer.

The reward was increased from $17,000 after a recent contribution from the Chilean government, Berkeley police said today.

On September 12, 2010, Adolfo Ignacio Celedon Bravo and his fiancée, a UC Berkeley graduate student, were walking home after a night out at Ashkenaz in Berkeley at 3:40 a.m. when they were robbed by two men at the intersection of Adeline and Emerson Streets near the Ashby BART station. Celedon was shot and later died at Oakland’s Highland Hospital; his fiancée was punched and suffered minor injuries. It was Celedon’s 35th birthday.

The suspects were described as two black males wearing dark clothing, and they fled in a dark, older model SUV.

Celedon moved to Berkeley to be with his fiancée, police said, and his family lives in Chile. He worked for IBM in Chile and did some acting in the Bay Area while his fiancée was in school. The Chilean media is closely following the case, police said.

Celedon’s death is “a high priority and a sensitive matter of concern to the Chilean government,” Chilean consulate general Rolondo F. Ortega said in a statement released today by Berkeley police. “The Consulate General of Chile and the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs support an expeditious investigation and prompt resolution to this case.”

Anyone who may know anything about this crime is urged to call the Berkeley Police Department Investigations Division Homicide Detail at (510) 981-5741, or the 24- hour police non-emergency number of (510) 981-5900. For anonymous tips, call the Bay Area Crimes Stoppers at (800)-222-TIPS (8477).
