Juvenile wounded, two people in custody in Skyline High School shooting

on November 13, 2025

A boy was shot at Skyline High School and two people were detained after gunfire erupted while students were in class Wednesday afternoon, police said.

In a Facebook post, police said officers were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. and arrived to find a male juvenile with a gunshot wound. They did not say if the wounded boy was a student at the school. Police said he was in stable condition after being taken by ambulance to a hospital. Two firearms were recovered, police said in the post.

While police have not said where in the building the shooting occurred, students told The Oaklandside that shots were fired in a restroom.

Assistant Chief James Beere said in a news conference that two juveniles were taken into custody, but he did not say if they or the wounded boy were students.

It’s unclear what led to the shooting. Police say they don’t believe the victim was armed.

“This is not what any of us ever wants to see in our schools. We don’t want to see our kids affected by violence like this. We know that there are too many guns on our streets, here and across the country, and we want to get a handle on this,” Beere said.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said in a statement, “Every child deserves to feel safe at school. Gun violence is a crisis we must address with unwavering urgency. We will continue working with law enforcement, our community partners, and school officials to protect our children and ensure schools remain sanctuaries of learning, not scenes of violence like today.”

Skyline students were under lockdown during the incident. This is the third lockdown of the school year at Skyline, a school of 2,000 students in the Oakland hills.

The school has had several violent episodes in recent years, including in 2024 when three people were shot and one arrested after a fight broke out after a graduation ceremony.

Skyline will hold classes on Thursday, and counseling will be available for students and staff, said John Sasaki, Oakland Unified School District spokesperson.
