With gun deaths rising, Lee calls Oakland meeting

on March 16, 2016

Last year, Oakland’s homicide numbers rose for first time in two years. The number of homicides investigated by Oakland police in 2015 was 93, which is 7 more than in 2014. As a result, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) recently convened a town hall in Oakland at Taylor Memorial Methodist Church to discuss the issue of gun violence. In attendance were local community members who had their own personal stories to tell, as well as Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney, who spoke on the panel about the loss of her grandson, Torian Hughes, in December.
