Good Morning People of Oakland.
Any locals been around long enough to remember this date in 1936? It was a special day in Bay Area history that’s made more poignant given recent news. For it was today, lo those 73 years ago, that the now much-maligned Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge opened to vehicular traffic. Happy Anniversary, Bay Bridge! Why is Oakland North the only one noticing it’s your b-day?
Let’s riff on that a bit.
The Trib reports this morning on the bridge’s possible closure and a proposal to set up red lights on the S curve.
McSweeney’s and the Public Press have been collaborating on a humongous investigation of the bridge retrofit project. We’re looking forward to reading that in the McSweeney’s newspaper project, due out in a couple weeks.

An Oakland Police officer under federal investigation for his involvement in a drug-related death in 2000 has returned to work.
O.N. reported on a fake bank robbery in downtown Oakland yesterday when NBC and its crew filmed the TV show “Trauma.” You don’t see a helicopter on 21st Street every day!

Alameda county has declared a state of emergency as swine flu continues to spread.
The proposal to convert rental units to condominiums fell flat, but not without a bit of controversy at an Oakland City Council subcommittee meeting earlier this week. Thomas Gorman reports.
