11/13/09 Friday the 13th

on November 13, 2009

Good Morning Oakland North,

It’s Friday the 13th so be extra careful as you go about your day because as superstition holds – bad luck may prevail. Our third Fri-teen this year! The next year to have three will be 2012.

I hope all of you can take a moment this morning while you sip your coffee or drink your tea, and check out Lillian Mongeau’s interactive feature on graphic novels created by Oakland International Highschool students. I guarantee you won’t be let down. Oakland International High School is made up of immigrant and refugee teens and in this feature they showcase stories they’ve written about their lives.

Richard Aoki was an Asian American and civil rights leader in the Bay Area. He was involved with the Black Panther Party during the 1960s and the Third World Liberation Front strike in 1960 at UC Berkeley – which led to the creation of the Ethnic Studies department. Puck Lo writes about his life and the film about his political activism that premiered last night at the Grand Lake Theater.

If you decide to visit the theater to see the film and have five or more unpaid tickets, you may be subject to the new car boot being used by the city of Oakland. With this new boot, the owner of the car can call the 800-number on the boot, and pay off the debt with a credit card, or can pay cash at Parking Citaiton Assistance at the Frank Ogawa Plaza. Paige Ricks reports.

And Children’s Hospital has been having trouble getting people to donate cash to their holiday party for families affected by HIV. Becky Palmstrom writes about why the hospital asked for cash this year rather than toys, and what implications the request is having on their gift collection.

And in upcoming events:

The Green Festival is in San Francisco this weekend featuring Oakland organizations including Women’s Earth Alliance, CommuniTree, and Art in Action. Individuals, businesses, and community leaders will speak on environmental issues that are impacting us locally and globally, and will display programs and products that they are developing to sustain the planet. The festival begins today and runs through Sunday. The times are as follows: Friday: 12pm – 7pm, Saturday: 10am – 7pm, and Sunday: 11am – 6pm.  Place: San Francisco Concourse Exhibition Center 635 8th St (at Brannan St).
