December 2, 2009: Virtual Food Drives, Train Accidents, and a Website Grows in Oakland

Sad news to start: An Amtrak train on its way to Sacramento to San Jose struck a car Tuesday evening near the intersection of Fruitvale Avenue and E10th Street, killing the man driving.
December is a busy month for the Alameda County Community Food Bank and this year, more than ever, the need is great. The food bank accepts nonperishable food donations year round but for those of us short on time but with a few dollars to spare, a virtual food drive makes it incredibly easy to donate online to help the food bank feed those who need it most.
And finally, Ladies and Gentlemen, may we present a website for the locavore in all of us: www.oaklandgrown.org. The new site taps into the growing appreciation for the city’s burgeoning food, art, and shopping options with links to all types of businesses and events on the Oakland scene. The project is a collaboration between the City of Oakland and the Oakland Merchants’ Leadership Forum, a collection of the numerous business districts and neighborhood associations in the city. Celebrate the local site’s launch with Councilmember Jane Brunner, area merchants, and lots of local shoppers today starting at 11am at Rockridge Antiques, 5601 College Avenue.
