Rebuilding Together Oakland offers info on Haitian relief efforts

People in Oakland are reaching out to help the victims of the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, where rescue efforts continue among severe devastation. Rebuilding Together Oakland Executive Director Kim Luqman sent out the following message to encourage members of the Oakland community to donate to Haitian relief efforts:

Dear Rebuilding Together Oakland,

I am appealing to you as part of the Rebuilding Together Oakland community to donate cash to support the victims of Tuesday’s quake in Haiti. Cash is desperately needed to purchase water, food, medical supplies and temporary shelter.

When I heard that Haiti was struck by a 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday and later saw images of the devastation, flashbacks and memories of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake quickly surfaced.

While the greater Bay Area suffered loss of life and property, most of the structural integrity of our homes, buildings and infrastructure remained relatively intact. This is not the case in Haiti. They have suffered massive loss of life and destruction of buildings and infrastructure.

To support survivors, basics such as clean water, food, medical supplies and temporary shelters are desperately needed. Embedded below are the links to the William J. Clinton Foundation (President Clinton is the U.N.’s Special Envoy to Haiti) and to the CNN Impact Your World websites. Both sites list multiple relief organizations accepting donations.
