TELL US: What are the worst roads in Oakland?
on September 28, 2010
According to last Wednesday’s study by the non-profit organization TRIP (The Road Information Program), Oakland’s roads are the fifth-worst in the nation.
Based on your driving experience, what are the worst roads in North Oakland? Email us your nomination for the most pothole-ridden, least safe, or otherwise decrepit public street in North Oakland.

Bikers’ hell: 1) Broadway running through Kaiser construction; 2) College Ave in front of Rockridge BART station. (Bumps, potholes, ruts, you name it.) Will think of more soon!
Does the Nimitz count? That is just about the worst anything ever.
Telegraph between 43rd and 48th is pretty rough on a bike as well.
Telegraph between 51st and Aileen is even worse than between 43rd and 48th. On both sides of the street, right where a bike would want to be, there are long stretches of several inch deep potholes. No fun at all.
Bicyclist hell:
– Lakeshore where it goes under 580, by the MLK mural.
– 14th Street between Market and Brush.
– Foothill from 14th Ave to the lake.
– E. 18th Street from 14th Ave to the lake.
– 12th Street at Broadway.
I know there are more that aren’t coming immediately to mind…
Broadway between 51st and W. MacArthur, and Telegraph between Aileen and 51st are the bane of my bicycling existence.
More biking hell (and not just because of potholes):
-13th Ave from MacArthur to E 24th St
-Lakeside-Harrison after the end of the bike lane
-Grand Ave from El Embarcadero to under I-580
-I second E 18th St
-Jackson St from 17th to 14th
I don’t know about bad roads to drive on since I don’t drive much.
56th Street, between San Pablo and Lowell…huge pot holes and speed bumps.
Interesting that most of the respondents so far are referring to their experiences while biking, as there is no travel mode specified in the original post. However, as a daily biker myself I can see how cyclists would be much more in tune with the pavement quality, and I know that I personally avoid biking on some streets altogether (I’m looking at you Telegraph) because of it.
All of the streets mentioned already are indeed pretty bad, and I would also add the popular bike routes on Genoa St and Chabot Rd to the list.
