Temescal: Then and Now

on February 20, 2012

Take a look at Temescal in the late 19th and early 20th centuries – a place where rail lines ran across Telegraph Avenue, and businesses thrived on the side – and Temescal today. What has changed? What has survived? All historical photos courtesy the Oakland History Room of the Oakland Public Library. Current photos by Amna Hassan.

Hey, wait a second – these photos with these captions are saying that there was a Genova’s at 55th and Telegraph when we already know there was one at 50th and Telegraph. I think it’s highly unlikely there were two of them within five blocks. The Genova’s in photo #11 that says it’s at 55th and Telegraph looks an awful lot like the one my husband and I patronized at 50th and Telegraph back in the mid-80s right before they moved around the corner to their current location. I think some captions got mixed up; the caption on #9 seems more appropriate for #11.
