The bright fall moon will be shining. Explore the redwoods from twilight to moonlight on an easy-moderate 3-4 mile hike. After the hike, stay and view the night sky through telescopes (weather permitting) or tour the Telescope Makers Workshop. Hike will take place rain or shine. What to expect on Nov. 8, twelve gourmet food trucks from Off the Grid featuring the best in local cuisine, local beer and wine specials in the Blue Oak beer garden, encore performances from the best of Friday Nights @ OMCA including DJs spinning hits from 5 to 7 p.m., and live bands from 7 to 9 p.m., and family-friendly drop-in game-making workshops celebrating Native American Heritage Month from 5 to 8 p.m. Half-price gallery admission for adults, ages 18 and under are free. After 32 years of treating audiences to his own Ska-Rockabilly brand of “Radiation” therapy, Roddy Byers is stepping away from the side of the stage as the Specials’ lead guitarist and into the center spotlight as the frontman/guitarist of his newest and best musical endeavor, the SKABILLY REBELS. Roddy and his Skabilly Rebels are the next phase of an audio formula Byers has been working to perfect since the day he stepped into the recording studio with the Specials back in the 80s – a fusion of the driving rhythm of Ska and the gritty, hard edge of Rockabilly, also known as “Skabilly.” Doors open at 9 p.m., $12/$15. OMCA Showcase Series: Days of the Dead

This exciting new series features artists from the 19th Annual Days of the Dead exhibition, The Tree of Life and Death: Dias de los Muertos 2013, presenting their work in the brief and illuminating format known as a lightning talk. Artists will share examples of their work and discuss the fusion of Mesoamerican traditions with themes in the Gallery of California Natural Sciences including indigenous knowledge, empathy, habitat and species loss, and accountability for preventing such losses through conservation and action. The showcase lecture will be followed by a brief artist- and curator-led tour. Included with Museum Admission. Free to OMCA Members.
Oakland Art Murmur – Saturday Stroll

As an alternative to the more festive atmosphere of First Fridays, visitors can enjoy the galleries during daylight hours EVERY Saturday afternoon, when 18 galleries and 7 mixed-use spaces are open from 1-5 (some open earlier and others stay open later, see individual venues for details). Some spaces also host special events on Saturday afternoons including artists receptions, artists talks, film screenings, concerts, and other performances. The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) brings together collections of art, history and natural science under one roof to tell the extraordinary stories of California and its people. As the only museum to focus entirely on the art and history of California, the diverse collections on display in the 300,000 square foot building present the art and tell the history of California from many angles. The museum invites visitors to experience the history of California through interacting with art, becoming art, and rewriting history. Normally $15, the museum offers free admission every first Sunday of the month. Please note, special exhibits may require a fee.
