Oakland and Alameda County officials try to jump-start solutions to homelessness

A new city-county collaboration has been put forward by Oakland City Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, along with Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, in an effort to grapple with the East Bay’s increasing homelessness crisis.

Feminine hygiene products unavailable to many East Bay women

Every month, homeless and low-income women and girls in the East Bay have to contend with the high cost of feminine hygiene products. For some women, these products are a luxury they just cannot afford.

Oakland’s City Attorney shows support for detained immigrants

Oakland’s City Attorney, Barbara J. Parker, has signed an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to grant immigrants, who are detained facing deportation proceedings, six-monthly bond hearings to assess whether their detention is justified.

Bay Area officials support sanctuary cities, despite threats of federal cuts

On January 25, President Donald Trump signed an executive order denying federal funds to sanctuary cities, such as Oakland and Richmond. But Bay Area officials are pushing back and affirming the status of sanctuary cities.
