Oakland Bites: An Egg Roll Convert

After weeks of grocery store, mealy tomatoes, I headed to the farmer’s market in hopes of finding some that were miraculously delicious. This far from peak season, it proved impossible, and I just couldn’t get excited about the booths of kale, lettuce, honey, and a whole lot of citrus. After wandering the market gauntlet for a while, I noticed that one booth had a regular line of two or three customers. At 10:45, Andy and Cindy Thai Cuisine was handing…

Recessionomics: An unhappy statistic

Bad news out of California’s Employment Development Department:  the unemployment rate in the state is now officially in the double digits, clocking in at 10.1%.  This is the first time we’ve hit double digits since June 1983, and it’s a pretty staggering jump from the rate at this time last year: 6.1%.  A conspicuous milestone, to say the least…

Busline Blog: Overheard on the 1R

A thing I love about Bay Area public transport is the consistency with which people treat buses and trains like personal living rooms. This covers everything from personal hygiene—applying makeup, removing makeup, clipping fingernails—to the All Time Most Annoying Thing Anyone Can Do, which is listen, loudly, to every single ring tone on their cell phone while they attempt to choose their favorite. All of that’s fairly benign, though. What to do when you overhear a cell phone conversation like…

Bike to the movies

Last night the Parkway Speakeasy Theatre hosted a “ride your bike to the movies night,” charging only four dollars to get in. The admission included free indoor attended valet bike parking. The Parkway does this the last Thursday of every month. So, next month, hop on your bike, cruise down to Park Boulevard, and kick back on a couch with a pitcher of beer and enjoy the silver screen. Information: Parkway Speakeasy Theatre 1843 Park Boulevard (between 18th St &…

North Oakland Now: Friday, February 27

Good afternoon everyone.  There’s a few things of note in today’s news, and it’s all BART.  First is its $34 million debt, as reported by the Contra Costa Times.  But, contrary to what you might think, they’re not raising fares or reducing services!  (Not this time around at least)   But despite the financial reprieve, BART board of directors have other issues to face.  The same article reports on the controversy involving BART’s hiring of a law firm performing an independent investigation into…

Oakland Bites: Zachary’s Art Contest

For all those Zachary’s Pizza fans out there, great news: the 2009 art contest is on. Design a poster for the Oakland classic, and your original art could grace the pizza parlor’s walls for all eternity…okay, well at least for the foreseeable future. Head to one of the locations–Oakland, Berkeley or San Ramon–to pick up contest rules and a 36” by 48” inch paper for your contest entry. Zachary’s loves bold color, so they recommend that you say away from…

Welcome to the Busline Blog…

… your source for all things AC Transit. As I’m sure many of you know, some crazy stuff happens on those buses. I ride the bus a lot, so I’ll be sharing anecdotes, observations, and things overheard. But I can only be so many places at once, and I know all of you have some bus stories as well. Send your tales of woe and crazy to me at buslineblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I’ll post the best ones here….

North Oakland Now: Thursday, February 26

Howdy, North Oakland!  Here’s your news for the day.  The stimulus has been passed and now, as the money makes it way to the East Bay, the debate on where to spend it has begun.  The Tribune reports that the Metropolitan Transit Commission’s decision to use stimulus dollars on BART projects instead of buses has prompted protest from AC transit riders.  The Chronicle writes that the cost of Alzheimer’s care in California is expected to almost double over the next…
