Community photo of the week: Tomatoes love Oakland

Every week, Oakland North will publish a photo submitted by one of our readers. This week’s photo is by Jessica Jung. She writes, “I took it on 14th St near Harrison. I took it because it says ‘I love Oakland’ in Korean! I love how it represents a piece of our city’s diversity pie.” If you’d like to contribute to “community photo of the week,” just send a favorite photograph taken in Oakland to staff@oaklandnorth.net with the subject: PHOTO. Adoptable animal of the week: Dempsey

Oakland North is continuing with our feature. Every week, Oakland Animal Services will spotlight an “Animal of the Week” that’s up for adoption at their facility. This week it’s a cat named Dempsey. In his dreams, Dempsey is a prize-winning raccoon-fighter. In reality, however, he is much too loving to harm anyone, which is probably why he kept getting beaten up by the raccoons at the feral colony he was rescued from. Dempsey is approximately 4-5 years old and is a very outgoing…

Cinco De Mayo in Oakland’s Fruitvale

Coatlicue drummers and dancers occupied the island between East and West-bound traffic on International Blvd in Oakland, as they celebrated and prayed. With shells at their ankles and feathers on their crowns, over a dozen people congregated and moved to the beat. Smoke from lit herbs such as sage filled the intersection. Police directed traffic around the celebration, as passersby honked and waved.

Oakland’s Ukulele Love-In

Maybe it’s their charming, upbeat sound. Maybe it’s because they’re tiny, portable and cheaper than guitars. Every month, local musician Madeline Tasquin, also known as Mana Maddy, hosts the “Ukulele Love-In” at Actual Cafe. Dozens of die-hard ukulele enthusiasts gather for a ukulele lesson, a featured ukulele performance, and a ukulele sing-a-long. You can catch the next event on May 11th. After…

Immigration reform hits home for Oaklanders in Tuesday vigil

Frank H. Ogawa Plaza looked a little bit like Vatican City Tuesday, as the dramatic afternoon light illuminated the faces of nuns, priests and immigrant families who gathered together in prayer and supplication. The goal: comprehensive immigration reform, an end to the raids that separate families and unity among different groups and coalitions of Americans. A guitarist changed the lyrics of popular Motown song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” to “Ain’t No Migra Strong Enough” while the crowd sang along…

Oakland by the Zip Code: Photos from the 94618

Enjoy the photo gallery for our weekly series, The Pulse of Oakland. This week’s featured ZIP code is 94618, which include Rockridge and parts of the Oakland Hills. Oakland North reporters will be taking photographs documenting each of the ZIP codes in Oakland over the next few months. Every neighborhood is diverse and different, and we want to capture that. Of course, we can’t see everything in Oakland ourselves. So we also want to know how you view this city….
