Update on December shooting: no progress, police say

on December 4, 2009

Oakland Police are reporting that they have no additional information on the shooting that took place earlier this week in North Oakland.

“We’re not sure what happened. We still need to interview one of the victims and are trying to speak with some witnesses,” said Anthony Toribio, Patrol Division Captain for Area 1, responsible for North and West Oakland.

An 18-year-old man was shot in the jaw and fell onto the Oakland-bound lane in the 5800 block of Shattuck Avenue at 4:30 pm last Monday afternoon. His friend, 19, was shot in the stomach. (Oakland North’s full report.) Both victims were still in the hospital as of this morning but are expected to survive, Toribio said.

Police have made no arrests in the case, and Toribio said they are not aware of any relationship between the shooting and any other recent criminal activity in the neighborhood.

Don Link, Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council President for the area, said there does not appear to be a connection to gang warfare, as he had originally worried. . Link said he spoke with a Lieutenant Freddie Hamilton of the Oakland Police Department yesterday and was told the incident did not look like gang warfare. If it were, there might have been automatic weapons and more than one shooter, Link said, adding that the Lieutenant told him there is speculation that this was “just a drug robbery attempt.”

“The neighborhood is very safe for people who are not part of these activities,” Link said.

Oakland North will continue to follow up on this incident over the weekend. If you live in the neighborhood and have any additional information, please feel free to email staff@oaklandnorth.net.

Sounds like more black on black violence. One set of thieves trying to steal from local drug dealers on Pat McCullough’s street.

When are the citizens of Oakland going to get involved in fighting crime in their community? The police cannot clean up Oakland without the help of the law-abiding citizens.

    Great job Oakland Police Department!

John Burris, this is not another opportunity for you to make money. There does not appear to be any loopholes for you to sue OPD or the police officers involved in this shooting.
