Specialist Alexis Hutchinson, a 21-year old Army cook and single mom fromOakland, will not be court-martialed for staying home with her child instead of deploying to Afghanistan last fall.  Specialist Hutchinson’s case gained attention when she was arrested for not deploying, after her child care arrangements fell through.

Six Oakland schools have won the Title I Achievement Awards, honoring schools that serve low-income children and made notable gains in state test scores. Two of the schools are in North Oakland: Berkley Maynard and Peralta Elementary.

A little farther afield but maybe inspiration for weekend plans: Mavericks surf contest is a go for Saturday.
