However you define North Oakland, the Temescal neighborhood is at the center of it. This area between 55th Street, West MacArthur Boulevard, Broadway and Highway 24 has become one of Oakland’s premier destinations, with its farmer’s market and five-star restaurants. The Wall Street Journal recently honored Temescal with the distinction of the “new Gourmet Ghetto.”
This past summer, the News21 Project at UC Berkeley’s School of Journalism dug deeper into life in Temescal, centering their investigation on the intersection of 51st Street and Telegraph Avenue. These multimedia pioneers created an interactive 360-degree panorama of this Temescal intersection, with links to stories about the neighborhood’s long Italian history, its Eritrean immigrant community, and life behind the counters of Bakesale Betty and Genova’s Deli.
Today, Oakland North is thrilled to be able to bring this in-depth look into one of the best known sections of our hometown.
