Temperatures cool and Don Perata leads in the polls
on August 25, 2010
Oakland thermometers showed a record high of 99 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday afternoon, but things cooled a bit today and are expected to return to normal temperatures for the rest of the week. The heat wave meant opened fire hydrants and higher air conditioning use, according to the Tribune, but the one day of hot temps did not cause any massive problems unless you credit yesterday’s two homicides to the heat.
Don Perata is currently leading in a poll on Oakland’s fall mayoral race conducted earlier this week by CBS 5. With many months to go in the crowded race, Perata, Quan and Kaplan top the list of voter favorites at the moment according to CBS 5.

The CBS poll that shows Perata with a strong lead is a flawed one.
Look closely at the respondents. The majority of the respondents are over 50. The majority of Oakland voters are not. The majority of the respondents are white. The majority of Oakland voters are not.
So what the poll basically says is that old white people are favoring Don Perata. We already knew that.
Voter turnout in the flatlands is a huge priority for a number of local non-profits, and even national ones. CBS will be surprised. So will CBS reporter Phil Matier, a strong Perata supporter who’s promoting this flawed poll.
