Commuters sound off on Bay Bridge closure

If you have Labor Day plans in San Francisco, factor in extra time for the BART.
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, now less than a week from opening its new East Span, will be shut down Wednesday night for a five days of construction by Caltrans, the Bay Area Toll Authority and the California Transportation Commission. Work will be done at both ends of the span to connect it to the Toll Plaza and Yerba Buena Island. The bridge is scheduled to re-open to traffic next Tuesday at 5 a.m.
“Motorists will encounter a new driving experience, as traffic moves from the upper and lower decks of the original bridge to the parallel, side-by-side decks of the new East Span,” according to the California Department of Transportation website, www.baybridgeinfo.org, which offers updates on the construction work. “From driving beneath a canopy of white suspender ropes to the wider road-decks with shoulders on either side, a drive across the new East Span is nothing like it used to be.”
Until that picturesque drive is possible, commuters are being encouraged to take public transportation. Fourteen BART stations will have hourly, all-night service over the weekend. Those stations will include El Cerrito Del Norte, Berkeley, MacArthur, 12th Street, Coliseum/Oakland Airport, Bay Fair, East Dublin, Concord, Walnut Creek, Embarcadero, Powell, 24th Street, Daly City and SFO.
On Labor Day Monday, BART will run on a Saturday schedule, with no overnight service Monday night.
AC Transit will have four temporary transbay stop locations at Coliseum/Oakland Airport, MacArthur, North Berkeley and West Oakland. Passengers coming from or going to San Francisco can take these buses from the temporary BART stops to their destinations. San Francisco Bay Ferry and Golden Gate Ferry will also have expanded services over the weekend.

You can expect zoo like conditions on Bart especially in the evening with all trains packed like anchovies in a can. There will be no Bart Police. Panhandlers and and street performers will expect a donation, bring some money for them. Anyone exiting at Embarcadero Bart Station can leave the station without paying the fare.
