Meet the next watering hole in our new bar series, The Nightcap: The Trappist is owned by a couple guys who fell in love with Belgian beer while travelling through Europe, and wanted to bring the experience of a Belgian pub to Oakland.

The Nightcap: Hanging out at Room 389

Meet the next watering hole in our new bar series, The Nightcap: Room 389 opened last year on Grand Avenue near Lake Merritt, and its laid-back atmosphere and good music has helped its popularity steadily grow. The bar, says owner Benjamin Cukierman, is a place where neighbors “come hang out with their friends without having to yell over the music.”

Ruffled feathers: The goose dispute at Lake Merritt

Every summer, from June into September, Lake Merritt is goose territory. The problem, some park visitors say, is what they leave behind – feathers and droppings, which cover the grass and smear the sidewalk, especially around Lakeside Park, during the summer months, when visits to the park peak.

Meet the next watering hole in our new bar series, The Nightcap: The Stork Club has live rock music every night it’s open and looks like a typical dive bar from the outside. But The Stork is also owned by a sweet, 74-year-old woman who shows off her Barbie collection at the bar and used to decorate a Christmas tree year-round.
