Bike Man Dan offers an alternative take on the traditional bike shop

Behind a small grey non-descript house near San Pablo Avenue and 60th Street in the Golden Gate neighborhood is a different kind of bicycle shop. As you walk down a path alongside the house, you pass chicken coops, Birds of Paradise and a vegetable garden full of beets, bok choy and broccoli. Past the garden, a door leads to a clean little studio full of tools and bikes. This is where Dan Woloz just opened a service-oriented bike shop called Bike Man Dan.

Adoptable Animal of the Week: Smitty

Oakland North is continuing with our feature. Every Tuesday, Oakland Animal Services will spotlight an “Animal of the Week” that’s up for adoption at their facility. This week it’s Smitty the cat.

Starting line changed for 5K Twilight Run

Due to weather conditions and course changes, the Oakland Running Festival’s 5k Twilight Run on Saturday will no longer start at Jack London Square.  Runners are asked to meet at the giant finish line in Jack London Square at 6:15 and volunteers will walk everyone just down the path to the new starting line.  The race will still start promptly at 6:30.
