Hello Oakland. Today’s theme: bounty and afterglow. First up, our own Lauren Callahan covered last night’s city council meeting, where the mayor had a twinkle in his eye because Oakland got more stimulus money than any other (except Chicago). In other news, it is cold. Very very cold. It may even rain. But in the spirit of wishful thinking (this is what we do over the holidays, right?), we have compiled info about a few holiday light shows to spread cheer in…
A BART train derailed this morning in an underground tunnel traveling from Lake Merritt to 12th Street station. BART spokeperson Jim Allison says trains are delayed 15 minutes on the Freemont to Richmond Line. Allison also says that the wheels left the tracks a short distance from 12th Street station and that 2 people needed medical attention. The cause of the derailment is still unknown. Bart crew trying to derail the car. Hoping to do by afternoon commute.

A photographic exhibit documenting how free antiretroviral drugs changes the lives of AIDS patients worldwide debuts this Wednesday at the African American Museum and Library. Becky Palmstrom will bring us the story.

The smells of cedar and pine hit tree-shoppers as they are greeted with a wall of green at the Simonis Quality Christmas tree lot entrance and begin their search through the labyrinth of trees for the perfect evergreen.
The Black critical mass group, Red, Bike, Green, is a Bay Area urban bicycling group that meets every first Friday of each month to mingle and ride their bikes. The one requirement: you must be of African descent. The group, which began a year ago, started to “improve the physical health, individual economy and local environment of African Americans by strengthening the relevance of bike culture within the Black community,” which is pushed by the group’s founders Jenna Burton, 27,…
