Oakland aglow with stimulus dollars, plus a bounty of other news

on December 10, 2009

Hello Oakland.

Today’s theme: bounty and afterglow.

First up, our own Lauren Callahan covered last night’s city council meeting, where the mayor had a twinkle in his eye because Oakland got more stimulus money than any other (except Chicago).

In other news, it is cold. Very very cold. It may even rain. But in the spirit of wishful thinking (this is what we do over the holidays, right?), we have compiled info about a few holiday light shows to spread cheer in the coming days.

1) The Oakland Zoo is plugging in the 120 twinkling, animal-shaped  displays. Now through January 3. Fun!

2) Starting tomorrow night, Fairyland is converting to “Winter fairyland,” a sparkling festival that celebrates Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Diwali and Chinese New Year. Bring a child and check it out!

And if the cold snap makes you want to share a little warmth and nourishment with those in need, then bring some food down to the Alameda County Food Bank Donation Drive location near you:

– 70 Washington Street, Office Building Lobby
– 530 Water Street, Office Building Lobby
– 77 Franklin Street, Office Building Lobby

Speaking of locations,  Oakland is unveiling 4 sites for a possible new ballpark for the  As. Read all about it in the Trib.

And last but not least, ON’s Lillian Mongeau has been producing a great bounty of news (such as this and this) and will soon add her latest contribution, a story about school closures and last night’s school board meeting.

Enjoy your Thursday and stay warm!
