OPD searching for suspect in West Oakland sexual assault

on June 8, 2011

The Oakland Police Department is looking for a man believed to be connected to a sexual assault and robbery that occurred in West Oakland on Tuesday morning.

According to an OPD statement, the man forced his way into a home on the 900 block of Apgar Street at around 9:40 am on Tuesday, sexually assaulted a female resident, and stole several electronic items from the home. The OPD describes the suspect as a bald African-American in his early 40s, approximately 5’9″ tall and weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing a blue and white collared shirt and jeans during the incident.

The woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. The OPD’s Special Victims Unit investigators have made a preliminary announcement that this incident is not related to other recent Oakland sexual assaults, including a home invasion in the Oakland hills area on May 27, four sexual assaults that took place in the general Lake Merritt area between September, 2010 and February, 2011, and a fifth attempted assault near Lake Merrit in April, which resulted in an arrest.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Youth and Family Services Division at (510) 637-0298.
