North Oakland Now 6.19.09

on June 19, 2009

Happy Juneteenth!

If you’ve never celebrated Juneteenth before you haven’t missed your chance. Oakland is strangely silent for such a soulful city and Berkeley partied last weekend.  However, San Francisco has a weekend chock full of Juneteeth activities if you’d like to try something new.

For the uninitiated, June 19, 1865 is the day when Texas slaves learned of their freedom. Yes, it was over TWO YEARS after the official Emancipation Proclamation, but southerners don’t need much of an excuse to fire up ye old barbecue grill.
