Summer treat series: Middle Eastern corridor on Telegraph

on June 9, 2011

Last week, Oakland North began a food series featuring summer treats that can be found in Oakland. Chinatown was the first installment in the series and this week we are focusing on treats that can be found in the Middle Eastern corridor along Telegraph Avenue between 28th and 32nd Streets.

Throughout the course of the week, Oakland North reporter Dara Kerr stopped by the various bakeries, halal butcher shops and markets to see what she could find—sampling both sweet and savory goods from Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, Afghanistan and even Ethiopia. She wandered from store to store tasting everything from Syrian rose watered pistachio baklava to Afghani cornmeal-coated fried chicken to clarified butter spiced with both black and white cumin.

The stores along this corridor are filled with all sorts of tasty items—too many to choose any favorites from—so, Dara just narrowed her list down to 12 of the most interesting (and also delicious) types of fare she found, which are featured in the photo slideshow above. Below are the details on where each treat can be found. If you have any Middle Eastern treat suggestions from this neighborhood be sure to add them in the comments section below. Or, got an idea for another kind of treat we should try? Let us know!
