Summer treat series: Refreshing drinks

on June 20, 2011

Throughout the month of June, Oakland North has been featuring a weekly food and drink series of summer treats that can be found in Oakland. Chinatown, Fruitvale and the Middle Eastern corridor along Telegraph Avenue were the first three installments in the series. This week we are focusing on cool drinks that can be found around the entire city.

Oakland North reporter Dara Kerr covered all sorts of neighborhoods, stopping in ice cream parlors, sandwich shops, specialty markets and restaurants to drink up different types of refreshments, including a watermelon slushy with boba pearls, Thai iced coffee, vanilla Italian soda with chocolate ice cream, minty lemonade, Vietnamese sugar cane juice and a traditional Mexican drink made from sweet fermented corn poured over shaved ice.

The city is filled with all sorts of delicious drinks—too many to choose a favorite from—so, Dara just narrowed her list down to 10, which are featured in the photo slideshow above. (Be sure to click the “captions” button on the bottom right of the slideshow to read about each drink). Below are the details on where each beverage can be found. If you have any refreshing drink suggestions be sure to add them in the comments section below. Or, got an idea for another kind of treat we should try? Let us know!
