A world of hope: Treating international patients with rare diseases at Children’s Hospital Oakland
on May 14, 2015
Meet Nomin Gambat, a 5-year-old girl who traveled all the way from Mongolia to Children’s Hospital Oakland to seek a clinical treatment for a disease so rare it strikes only 1 in a million people. But coming to the United States for medical treatment is difficult, requiring a special visa and proof that there is no cure for the person’s disease in their home country, and it is a stressful experience for families who must sometimes be separated for long periods while the child participates in the treatment.
Click on the video above to learn about how the hospital works with families from abroad to help people with extremely rare diseases.

Thank you for a wonderful story. I was a nurse on 5 south in 1990’s. I worked nights. Most of us administered the chemo during those hours. The nurses I worked with were amazing, the staff was amazing. The kids and parents sometimes were there for weeks. But in that time patients became friends and family of the CHO staff. A bond was made that lasted a lifetime. I was proud to be part of that family!!!
