Seniors learn about beekeeping at Piedmont Gardens retirement community

on October 31, 2017

Piedmont Gardens is a senior living and retirement community in Oakland. In the spring of 2017, staff members introduced a honeybee sanctuary to the community’s outdoor rooftop garden. Residents learned about the beekeeping process through livestream video presented by staff members, as well as a lecture series. Since April, the hives have produced 30 pounds of honey, which the residents bottle and sell at the Piedmont Gardens Farmer’s Market. They also collect the hives’ beeswax, which they use to make lotions for the community’s aromatherapy activity programs.
