Graffiti artists do battle at DeFremery Park
on October 14, 2009
Twenty four of the most talented graffiti artists from California, Chicago, Hawaii and New York battled in West Oakland last Saturday.
They each had one canvas, thirteen spray paint cans, and five hours to complete a work of art incorporating the word “grow.”
The contest was part of the second annual “Life is Living” festival – a day of hip hop and “green”-themed events that included breakdancing, skateboarding, stenciling, live music performances, natural building with bamboo, and a youth health summit.
The winner – who goes by the name Mr. Vogue TDK, of Oakland – walked away with a cash prize of $1,000 and some Adidas gear.
Oakland North spoke with East Oakland contestant Leslie Lopez while she worked on her piece.
