Curling playoff takes over Oakland Ice Center
on February 22, 2011
Typically reserved for hockey and ice skating, Oakland Ice Center’s NHL-sized rink was flooded with participants in the California curling playdown this past Saturday afternoon.
The six teams in contention—two women’s squads going head-to-head, and four men’s teams playing a round-robin style playoff—competed for the lone slots to the annual Pacific International Cup (PIC) tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Canadian tournament is considered by many to be the step before national-level competition on the way to Olympic qualification.
Two Bay Area teams, Team Hazard and Team Altus, took home the victories and will join single teams from select states in the United States, as well as teams from places like China, Australia and Iceland at the tournament. All will head to Canada in April to take on some of the world’s best curlers.
The San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club, founded in 1958, recently expanded its league at Oakland Ice Center to a second night due to growing demand to play. The club now meets on Wednesday and Friday nights, and those interested in learning how to curl at one of the organization’s clinics should visit the club’s website.
