Oakland Votes 2012: Liveblogging the election

Oakland North’s reporters will be liveblogging today’s election starting at 3 pm and running … til it’s over! Watch this space for updates throughout the day, and returns and election results starting after 8 pm. California live polling returns: Updates begin at 8 pm

Once the polls close, this interactive project will begin to update with live polling results collected in the state of California for the presidential, US Senate, US House and California Assembly races, as well as for the state ballot propositions. All data is drawn from the California Secretary of State. Look for updates beginning at 8 pm Pacific Standard Time

Adoptable animal of the week: Ash

Oakland North is continuing with our feature. Every week, Oakland Animal Services will spotlight an “Animal of the Week” that’s up for adoption at their facility. This week it’s a cat named Ash. Ash is a short-haired solid white male two years old. He has a  smudge pattern on the top of his head which may diminish as he gets  older. Ash is an active cat who loves to play, chase, and carry away his  prey to his special corner….

You Tell Us: Vote yes on Measure A1

If you read the Measure A1 Expenditure Plan, you will see that, by law, the money must be used for animal care, children’s educational programs and maintaining the zoo’s affordability. It does specify that money would go towards upgrading animal enclosures and repairing animal shelters – but this “construction” is a far cry from using the funds to expand the zoo.

You Tell Us: Vote no on Measure A1

I enjoy the zoo, and I truly appreciate how the East Bay Zoological Society transformed it into a special East Bay destination. But their agenda for the zoo conflicts with the preservation of open space and native habitats, and over the years they’ve worked very hard to blur the distinction between the Zoo and Knowland Park and to secure political allies that will back their proposals.
