Piedmont Gardens is a senior living and retirement community in Oakland. In the spring of 2017, staff members introduced a honeybee sanctuary to the community’s outdoor rooftop garden.
Senate Bill 63, signed by Governor Jerry Brown on October 12, will make about 2.8 million small business workers in the state qualified to take the unpaid leave to bond with their newborn, or with a child they have recently adopted or are fostering. They will have a guaranty of job security when they return. The new law will come into effect January 1, 2018.

The Unity Council hosted their last of three Altar workshops for el Día de los Muertos finishing up with a “how to make paper mache skull” workshop. Over 50 Bay Area residents attended the workshop, making it the highest attended workshop out of all three.

On Sunday, October 22, 2017 hundreds packed the grounds at the Oakland Museum of California to participate in the 23rd Annual Days of the Dead community festival. The festival included dance and music performances, arts and crafts, and delicious Mexican foods.
It was a busy afternoon at Oakland Technical High School as students from all over Oakland gathered in the school’s cafeteria to meet with college admissions counselors from all over the country. Students walked around with smiles on their faces after speaking to different college admissions counselors about possibilities for their futures. Through the theme of the monarch butterfly, the Oakland Museum of California’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit is a tribute to ancestral spirits and human migration.
Every Monday night, from 7-8 p.m., teenagers gather at the Benioff Children’s Hospital’s Sport Medicine Center in Oakland for a Pilates class. The classroom participants range from young athletes to children regaining their strength after surgeries.
