Fifty-five foot Christmas tree raised in Jack London Square

The average Christmas tree can be brought home in the back of the family station wagon, with the top of the tree hanging out the back window. Oakland’s Christmas tree was a bit too big for that. A Peterbilt truck hauled the 55-foot, 8,000-pound red fir from to Oakland Shasta County in a 50-foot trailer—with the top of the tree hanging out the back.

Oakland fireboat Sea-Wolf navigates a murky future

The deck was full of motion. Firefighters were readying each turret, the giant revolving guns that shoot water instead of bullets. The Sea-Wolf has four turrets; one on either side of the boat’s deck, one in the front, and the largest located on top of the boat. The fireboat has the capacity to shoot out 8,000 gallons of water per minute.

Brown rallies voters in Oakland

Former Oakland mayor and leading gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown held a rally Monday at Oakland’s Jack London Square, making a final push toward a return to the state’s top political position. Brown was joined on stage by Sen. Barbara Boxer and San Francisco district attorney Harris, who is running for state attorney general. Brown, who was California’s governor from 1975 to 1983, leads Republican candidate Meg Whitman by a considerable margin in the latest polls.
