Dancing under the stars at Jack London Square

on July 18, 2011

Every Friday night this summer, Oakland’s Linden Street Dance Studio is offering free dance lessons at Jack London Square.  Anyone is welcome to attend and learn the basics of a variety of dance styles, including salsa, swing and tango. A one-hour dance party with a DJ follows the half-hour lesson.

The program, named Dancing Under the Stars, is in its third year and attracts as many as 200 people. “There’s no pressure,” said Vanessa Montoya, a dancing instructor with the studio. “Once you’re out here, you will realize that everyone is just having a good time.”

Derrick Ross came to Jack London Square with his wife, Camille Williams, last Friday, for the waltz night. “It’s the best deal in town,” he said. The couple danced in the breeze, and also won a free brunch at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant during a raffle. “How can you beat that?” Ross said.

Take a look at the video of last week’s Dance Under the Stars.

This is a neat way to get people interesting in dancing and improving their health. More cities should offer dancing under the stars.
